Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of blindness in older Americans and is #1 most common in those of Hispanic descent.*
Based on our work and others, Medicare now provides a free benefit for glaucoma screening.
This is available to the beneficiaries of Medicare that are at high risk for glaucoma namely those with diabetes, Hispanic Americans, and African-Americans. Glaucoma can be treated if identified.
If not treated, glaucoma can lead to permanent visual loss.
Screening involves measurements of the intraocular pressure and examination of the eye and the optic nerve. This is a simple procedure, but one that ultimately can save the vision of those at risk.
